NOT JUST FOR PHONE CALLS: Call shops are places where especially the poorer immigrants go to call the countries they have left. You may also have your television, radio, mobile phone, fridge, computer or camera repaired, or your hair done or a hair extension fitted in a call shop. I have also seen currency exchange, courier mail and package services, photographic printing and internet gaming on offer. A copy machine in the corner caters to the insatiable demand of the Belgian administration for paperwork. The set-up and decoration of call shops speak of individual eccentricity and urban energy. They also tell stories about identities, economic opportunities, discrimination and belonging.
